Named after Captain Dunker

The FCI standard says the Norwegian Hound, also called Dunker, was created by Captain Wilhelm Conrad Dunker through crosses among scent hounds in the first half of the 19th century. Local hare hounds were part of the stock.

A scent hound that follows game

The FCI classifies it as a medium-sized scent hound and lists its use as a scenthound. Its outline is nearly rectangular, with a firm back and well-angulated legs for ground-covering movement.

Merle or diluted black with tan and white

The FCI colors are diluted black with tan markings or blue merle with pale tan and white markings. Jet black with warm tan is less desirable, as is a coat that is at least 50 percent white. White reaching the shoulders, underside of the belly and legs is accepted as correct marking.

Height ranges and preferred size

The FCI height range is 50–58 cm for males and 47–54 cm for females; preferred heights within those ranges are 52–54 cm and 49–51 cm. Chest depth is about half the height. The coat is straight, hard and dense, with somewhat more hair on the rear thighs and tail permitted.
