Canaan Dog

Temperament
Alert, Vigilant, Confident
[4]A watchdog and guard dog from Israel
The FCI standard gives Israel as the country of origin and lists watchdog and security work as the breed’s purpose. It places the Canaan Dog in the Spitz and primitive-types group.
[1]Development from local desert dogs
The AKC history article recounts the Menzels’ arrival in Palestine in 1938. It describes Rudolphina Menzel’s subsequent interest in local semi-wild dogs after traditional guarding breeds struggled in the desert climate.
[2]A medium, square primitive-type build
The FCI standard describes a medium, nearly square dog with erect ears and a curled tail. It is alert, but the standard does not characterize it as naturally aggressive.
[1]A harsh coat from sand to reddish brown
The short-to-medium outer coat is straight and harsh over a dense undercoat. FCI colours include sand to red-brown, white, black and spotted coats, with white markings allowed in all colours. A black mask is permitted on all colours; any mask must be symmetrical. Grey, brindle, black and tan, and tricolour are unacceptable.
