A Croatian shepherd dog used for gathering and guarding livestock, and for watchdog work. Gathering a flock and protecting it are different tasks, illustrating the range of work covered by the term shepherd dog.

On the smaller side of medium-sized dogs, with short hair on the head and legs highlighted by JKC. The visible outlines of face and limbs contrast with fully long-coated dogs such as the Puli.
[1]Colour and comparisons
Black is the basic colour, with location-specific rules for small white areas. JKC permits limited white under the throat and on the chest but not on the head, body or tail. The location of a marking matters as well as its colour.
