A rabbit-hunting dog from the Canary Islands

The FCI standard gives Spain as the country of origin and identifies the dog called Podenco Canario in the Canary Islands. A connection from ancient Egypt to the islands is presented by the standard as a theory, not a certainty.

Hunting with scent, sight and hearing

The FCI standard describes a heat-tolerant rabbit hunter adapted to irregular terrain. It uses scent, sight and hearing to locate rabbits in crevices, stone heaps and volcanic tunnels.

A slender build and short red-and-white coat

The dog is medium-sized, slender and slightly longer than tall, with a short, smooth, dense coat. The FCI standard prefers red and white, with red ranging from orange to deep mahogany, and describes all combinations of those colours.
