[1]A dog from the mountains of northern Portugal
The FCI standard describes an old Iberian breed from the village of Castro Laboreiro in northern Portugal. The breed’s name comes from that mountain village.
[1]A guardian of livestock, homes and property
The FCI lists livestock guarding, watch and guard work. Its standard says protection from wolves remains important in the breed’s region of origin.
[1]A mountain build and grey brindled coat
The FCI length-to-height ratio is 7:6. Body hair is about 5 cm long, without an undercoat. Wolf colour is most common, while the locally named mountain colour is preferred: shades of grey with black brindling and pine-nut, reddish and mahogany hairs. A small white chest spot is permitted.
