[4]Once known as a stable or coach dog
The UKC standard says the exact origin is unknown but records popularity as a gentleman's companion in the late 19th century. It says the breed neared extinction during World War II, then H. M. Barkman began rebuilding it through selective breeding in the 1970s.
[1]A small, squarely built stable dog
It is an active, friendly small dog with a square outline, a short broad head, drop ears and a sturdy body. It was once known as a gentleman's stable or coach dog.
[1]A wiry yellow coat
The coat is coarse, harsh and wiry, giving a naturally tousled appearance. It is self-colored yellow in shades from pale to dark straw, with darker ears, moustache, beard and eyebrows permitted.
[1]Size and coat length in the UKC standard
The UKC standard gives a height of 14–16.5 inches, about 35.6–41.9 cm, and a weight of 20–22 pounds, about 9–10 kg. Body hair is 1.5–2.5 inches, about 3.8–6.4 cm, with sufficient undercoat. Eyebrows should not hide the eyes, ear hair is shorter, and dense leg hair that hides the outline is a fault.
