Manchester Terrier

Temperament
Keen, Alert, Devoted
[5]A British ratting terrier
The UKC standard traces the breed to early Black and Tan Terriers valued for ratting in industrial northern England. It credits Samuel Handley of Manchester with stabilizing the breed, after which it became known by that city’s name.
[1]A lean, compact outline
The UKC Manchester Terrier is small, compact and elegant, with a smooth coat. Its long, flat wedge-shaped head and short glossy hair emphasize the clean outline.
[1]Black and tan, in two size varieties
The UKC standard allows sharply divided jet black and rich mahogany tan, and divides the breed into Standard and Toy size varieties. This is the UKC show classification and should not be assumed to match the FCI Manchester Terrier standard.
