A mountain dog of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia

The FCI standard says native shepherd dogs of mountain areas and nearby valleys formed the basis for rebuilding the Tornjak. It cites written records from 1067 and 1374 and says recovery work began in the 1970s after the population neared extinction.

A large, agile livestock guardian

The Tornjak herds and protects livestock and guards farmyards. It is large and powerful, yet nearly square and balanced, with the agility expected of a mountain dog.

A long-coated parti-colored dog, often on white

The coat is double, with a long, thick topcoat and a rich winter undercoat. The standard describes parti-colors on a usually white ground, including dogs with a black mantle and white markings or nearly white dogs with small patches.

Height and proportions

The FCI height range is 65–70 cm for males and 60–65 cm for females, with a tolerance of 2 cm either way. Body length should not exceed height by more than 8 percent. Short hair on the face and legs contrasts with the mane and long tail feathering.
