A Norwegian dog that searched for puffins on cliffs

The Lundehund, or Puffin Dog, is believed to be a very ancient breed native to Norway. The UKC account also says it is believed to have developed traits suited to locating puffin nests on steep rocks along fjords and shores.

A flexible neck and unusually mobile forelegs

The UKC standard describes forelegs that can turn about 90 degrees sideways and a neck that bends backward until the head almost touches the back. Movable cartilage also lets the ear openings fold shut.

A small, many-toed Spitz

It is a small, light, rectangular Spitz with six toes on each forefoot, at least five of which support the body. Its double coat has a rough outer layer and soft undercoat; colors include reddish brown, gray, black and white with dark patches.

Height and average weight

UKC gives a height of 13¾–15 inches for males, about 34.9–38.1 cm, and 12½–13¾ inches for females, about 31.8–34.9 cm. Weight is stated as an average, rather than an upper limit: 15½ pounds for males, about 7.0 kg, and 13¼ pounds for females, about 6.0 kg.
