White Spitz dogs from Germany

The UKC history says white Spitz dogs were probably brought to the United States by German immigrants, where they served as watchdogs and family pets. Called German Spitz in their homeland, they were renamed American Eskimo in 1917 during World War I.

Two size varieties

The body is about as long as tall, with erect triangular ears and a wedge-shaped head. The UKC standard gives a height range of 9–19 inches (about 23–48 cm) and uses two show size classes: Miniature and Standard.

A white coat with a neck ruff

The thick double coat has a short undercoat and longer straight guard hairs, forming a mane at the neck, trousers on the hind legs and a plumed tail. Pure white is preferred; white with cream or biscuit, and cream, are also permitted.

Three size divisions in the AKC standard

AKC divides heights into Toy, 9–12 inches; Miniature, over 12–15 inches; and Standard, over 15–19 inches, with body length about 1.1 times height.
