[1]A medium-sized hound from the Vendée
The French Briquet Griffon Vendéen takes its name from “briquet,” meaning a medium-sized dog. The FCI standard says Comte d’Elva began selection before World War I, producing a smaller form of the Grand Griffon Vendéen. After repeated wartime losses, the type reappeared in 1946.
[1]A scent hound that hunts in small packs
The standard describes it as a small-pack hound used for hunting large game, foxes and hares. It is noted for a fine nose, speed and agility over rough ground and through brambles.
[1]A rough, long coat with a dense undercoat
The coat is long and rough to the touch, with a dense undercoat. Pronounced eyebrows do not cover the eyes, and the muzzle has a moustache. The standard allows patterns including black and white, black and tan, white and orange, and tricolour.
[1]Height ranges for males and females
The FCI height range is 50–55 cm for males and 48–53 cm for females, with a tolerance of 1 cm either way. The build is stocky but balanced, with a relatively light head. The narrow, low-set ears do not reach the end of the muzzle.
