A hunting dog associated with Cantal

Hunters in France developed this pointer as a strong dog able to work tirelessly. The UKC standard describes its origins as ancient and says it had been known in the Cantal region for at least two centuries.

Built for a full day in the field

This medium-sized, sturdy pointer is built to cover ground with supple movement. Its standard notes natural hunting instincts and a keen sense of smell alongside its pointing work.

Black-and-white markings on a short, glossy coat

UKC calls for a short, glossy coat that is not too fine. The colour is black with white markings that are ticked or roaned. A black head with a white blaze is preferred, but a white head with ticking or roaning is acceptable. Solid black, solid white, and clear white markings without ticking or roaning are eliminating faults.

A square body and ears reaching the nose

The UKC standard calls for equal body length and height. Males stand 22.5–24.5 inches (about 57–62 cm), and females 21–23 inches (about 53–58 cm). The low-set ears are rounded at the tip and fold slightly inward; they reach the nose but do not extend beyond it.
