This shrew is widely distributed across northern Eurasia. A 2025 paper reported a specimen trapped near Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2023 as the first record for the Baltic region.
The tail is angular in cross-section and ends in a tuft of longer hairs. The paper cites earlier literature describing the coat as brown with a pinkish tinge.
One non-adult male was trapped in a wet mixed forest influenced by beaver activity near Vilnius. The authors say further records are needed to clarify habitat preferences at the western edge of the range.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
