The Ontong Java flying fox is documented from specimens collected on Ontong Java Atoll in the Solomon Islands. These records are historical and do not establish its present range or population.
In two of the six examined specimens, the mantle just behind the ears was ochraceous-buff. This is a specimen observation, not a universal color description.
The collector reported that the species was not abundant on Ontong Java at the time. The account also noted that the small atoll islands were used almost entirely for coconut production.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
