The Red-pate Cisticola is mainly an East African bird, with confirmed records in northeast Nigeria. The rust-red crown and gray back described below apply only to the breeding-plumaged scotoptera subspecies.
In breeding plumage, the scotoptera subspecies has a rust-red crown that contrasts with a pale smoky-gray mantle.
In Yobe State, northeast Nigeria, it has been confirmed in scrub around farms and thorny grassland. The report checked vocalizations to separate it from Dorst's Cisticola.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
