The Spotted Rail occurs locally in marshes, wet savannas, and rice fields from Mexico and the Greater Antilles south to Argentina. In Jamaica, breeding evidence was reported after a long gap in records.
A female collected in Jamaica in 1863 was described with olive-black plumage, olive-brown wing coverts and white spots, a red iris, a green bill orange at the base, and rosy-pink legs.
Breeding evidence was reported from Jamaica's Upper Black River Morass in 2012, and a juvenile was photographed there in 2014.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
