A parrot of Indonesia’s Moluccan islands, with striking differences in plumage and bill colour between males and females.
Males are green with orange bills; females have red and blue plumage and black bills.
A bird survey on Seram, Indonesia, in December 1989 and January 1990 often found Moluccan Eclectus in forest below 300 m that had not been logged. Observers spent ten minutes at each site between 6:30 and 11 a.m., recording birds they saw or heard.
Across all species, they counted 867 records and 73 species at 65 unlogged sites, compared with 495 records and 57 species at 46 sites in forest logged within the previous six years. More species were recorded in the unlogged forest. Eclectus records in logged lowland forest were too few to estimate numbers. The surveyed lowland sites were in central and northeastern Seram. The Moluccan Eclectus is a large parrot that eats fruit and seeds.
