A rat from the Isalo region of south-central Madagascar. The original paper reports a small number of captures among riverside rocks and on an open slope.
The back is pale brownish gray. The basal tail is intensely black, contrasting with a white tuft on roughly the distal third.
At Canyon des Rats in Isalo, specimens were captured beside a river among rock crevices, ferns, and plants growing on rocks. Another was found on an open rocky slope about 500 m from forest. From these few records, the authors suggested that at least some activity may be terrestrial.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
