This monarch flycatcher occurs in northern New Guinea and on Yapen Island, from lowlands into the mountains. Males contrast black and white with an ochre collar; females are more subdued and brown-toned.
The male has a black head and back, a blue eye-ring, a bright erectile ochre collar, and white lower back and underparts. The female has a grey crown, olive-brown wings and tail, a red-brown collar and throat, and white lower underparts.
It uses lowland to montane rainforest up to about 1,500 m and forest edges, feeding mainly on insects. It forages mostly in the mid-storey, alone, in pairs, or at the edge of mixed flocks.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
