In summer, the dorsal fur is brownish and the underside is silvery white or gray. The coat becomes darker and thicker in autumn, and the tail is faintly two-toned.
It is generally solitary, does not hibernate, and remains active through the day and night, with two activity peaks at night and one in early morning. It eats insects, earthworms, spiders, and snails.
