A 1993 study of Southeast Asian specimens recognized this bat as a distinct Nycteris species. It concluded that the species occurs mainly on Java and nearby islands.
The fur is predominantly dark brown, although some specimens had beige or reddish tints.
It is forest-dependent and roosts in caves or tree hollows. Surveys in Java’s karst ecosystem found it mostly in caves, where it was reported roosting alone or in pairs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
