A small tern that nests on sandy beaches and dives into shallow water to catch fish.
It has a white body, pale grey wings, a black crown, and orange-yellow bill and legs. In non-breeding plumage the crown is mostly white, mottled with black.
It scrapes a shallow nest above the high-tide mark on sand, usually laying one or two speckled eggs. It feeds almost entirely on fish, caught by plunging into shallow water.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
