Niobe's Shrew is recorded from the Ruwenzori and Kivu mountains and from Nyungwe in Rwanda. It has dark reddish-brown to brownish-gray fur and long bristles near the base of the tail.
Its fur is dark reddish-brown to dark brownish-gray. Long bristles are restricted to roughly the proximal third of the tail.
One animal was captured at Mount Bigugu in Nyungwe in 2009, and its DNA record confirmed the identification. The 2025 study inferred a link to high-altitude montane forest and marshes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
