Alexandromys maximowiczii is recorded in the Russian Far East, northeastern Mongolia, and northeastern China. The Mammal Diversity Database uses Alexandromys for the current genus; a regional account describes dark fur, especially on the underside, and dark feet.
The coat is dark overall, particularly on the underside; the feet are dark and the tail is only weakly bicolored.
The account lists wet forest sites, damp river valleys and meadows, bank shrubs, and tussock bogs as habitats.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
