This rodent ranges through the southern Andes of Chile and Argentina. A field study in southern Chile recorded mainly subterranean habits and use of grassy areas with loose soil and woodland edges.
It is robust and weighs 60–65 g. The ears and tail are relatively short, and the foreclaws are long.
It lives mostly underground but sometimes makes surface forays, and it can be active by day or night. In Aisén it used lush grass and loose soil, sometimes under scattered lenga or ñirre trees, and ate plant parts, fungi, and invertebrates.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
