During spring migration, northern pintails can increasingly fly in daylight as they travel north. Birds captured in northern Italy generally favoured low and decreasing sun altitude, yet also travelled beneath bright skies near their northern destinations. Preference for darkness was stronger over forests than over open landscapes.
A study published in 2026 analysed 25 complete spring migrations from 22 birds captured in the Venice lagoon. Destinations extended from northeastern Europe to western Siberia. Among 21 journeys with stops lasting at least a day, 17 had their longest stop in the first half. Long early stays gave way to shorter stops later in the journey.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
North Dakota’s 2025 conservation plan identifies loss of grassland–wetland complexes and wetland drainage as threats. Nests in cropland or previous-year stubble can be destroyed during farming. Recommendations include protecting prairie and shallow wetlands, restoring degraded wetland hydrology and vegetation, and maintaining vegetated buffers to reduce erosion and runoff.
