This spiny mouse was collected on dry, stony slopes and wooded savannah in Tanzania. In the original description, measured specimens were larger and heavier than A. muzei, with shorter tails and hind feet. A 2019 study assigns a lineage extending from eastern Tanzania to central Mozambique to this species.
Specimens measured for the 2011 description were larger and heavier than A. muzei, but had shorter tails and hind feet and a more robust skull.
Type specimens from Nguru Ya Ndege were collected on a very dry, gently sloping hillside with wooded savannah. The stony hillside also had hilltop forest, scattered miombo and gully forest. This describes the collection site in the 2011 original account.
