The Sierra Madre Occidental pocket gopher is a rodent of the highlands of western Mexico. It inhabits high-elevation pine-oak forests and ranges from northwestern Chihuahua through Durango to western Zacatecas and northeastern Nayarit.
In the original description based on the Santa Teresa type, the summer coat is light umber to russet brown, darker along the back midline, on the nose, and around the ears. The underside is paler and more tawny; the lower feet and tail tip are usually white. The account describes young animals as duller and darker, and the ears as small and claws slender.
