A stocky, short-tailed bird that breeds in grassland.
It has a stocky body and a short tail. Females in winter plumage have pale brown on the throat.
Japanese Quail nest on the ground and lay light-shelled eggs with dark markings. The amount of marking varies between females, and the surroundings affect how conspicuous an egg appears.
A 2013 paper studied captive females reared at the University of Glasgow. Fifteen laying birds could choose between four sand colours. Females with heavily marked eggs tended to choose sand resembling the dark markings.
Some females with lightly marked eggs chose sand matching the pale shell background. Image analysis showed that chosen substrates tended to make egg outlines harder to detect. Egg appearance and maternal laying-site choice jointly affected concealment.
Japan Ministry of the Environment Red List · Vulnerable · Japan
Japan’s fifth Red Data Book, published in 2026, lists wild Japanese Quail nationally as Vulnerable. It reports continuing habitat loss and deterioration and low numbers across the country. Breeding grasslands and wintering habitat are conservation priorities in Japan.
