This woodcreeper has a large, strong bill. It climbs tree trunks while searching for insects in forests of central South America.
It is rufous overall, with a lighter head and underparts, and a long, strong, pale bill that curves downward.
It flies from the top of a tree to the lower part of a neighboring trunk, then climbs while looking for insects. It occurs in dry forest and humid lowland forest.
