The wood lemming lives in the moss layer on the floor of wet coniferous forests. It gathers and hides moss in autumn to eat during winter.
Its coat is ash gray with a cinnamon-colored saddle across the back.
It makes feeding tunnels in moss and, in autumn, stores moss under stones or fallen trunks to use in winter.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
