This grasswren occurs in Australia's inland dune country. A 2021–2022 study reported records outside its previously known range and persistence at sites without Sandhill Canegrass.
Adult females have rufous-brown flank feathers, a feature absent in adult males.
From May 2021 to August 2022, researchers documented 39 sites beyond the previously known range, with Sandhill Canegrass absent at every site. Breeding evidence was recorded at two sites.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
