MSW3 treats Vernay's climbing mouse separately and records it only from its type locality in Angola, comparing it with D. mesomelas. A 2016 paper's table, based on IUCN information consulted in 2015, lists rainforest as its habitat.
Compared with D. mesomelas, MSW3 describes it as much smaller, with a shorter tail and a buffy-gray underside. It was originally described in 1937 as a subspecies of D. mesomelas, so this comparison follows the later MSW3 treatment as a separate species.
A 2016 specialist paper lists rainforest as this species' habitat, using IUCN database information available in 2015.
