A 19th-century Argentine bird account records it in Argentina and Uruguay. It describes glossy black-and-purple plumage and small winter groups.
Hudson described glossy black plumage with purple reflections, a slight green gloss on the wings and tail, and a chestnut spot at the wing joint. Females were described as smaller than males.
In Hudson’s Buenos Aires-area account, it was present year-round, in winter parties of no more than five or six and in pairs during the breeding season.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
