This shrew is known with certainty from the northern peak of Bioko Island. It occurs in montane moist forest and grassland above the treeline; a similar Cameroonian population may be a different species.
The 1968 description compared the Bioko population with Sylvisorex morio morio, reporting a smaller body and slightly darker, especially ventral, coloration.
The IUCN assessment places it in montane tropical moist forest and grasslands above the treeline.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
