It has a thick, hooked yellow bill and a pale gray head. Small groups move through reedbeds.
It is about 15–18 cm long. Its thick yellow bill hooks at the tip. The pale gray head has a narrow white eye-ring and a long, broad black eyebrow. The back and wings are brown-toned, and the center of the belly is whitish.
It lives in small flocks in reedbeds by rivers, lakes, and swamps, climbing and jumping between stems. It opens reed stems to feed on insect larvae inside. The source gives a May–August breeding season and nests woven among reeds.
