The older description of its brown crown comes from a time when the northern “alfredi” population was treated within a broader species complex.
In Rand's 1958 treatment, birds called “alfredi” from northern Nyasaland and nearby areas had a brown crown like the back, unlike the grey-headed forms elsewhere in the broader complex.
A 2023 field report recorded several Sharpe's Greenbuls in Manyanjere Forest, on the Zambian side of Nyika National Park. This is a direct account of birds observed in that forest.
