This rat has been recorded in hill and lower montane forests of western New Guinea. The number of hairs growing from each tail scale helps distinguish it from a close relative.
In a specimen comparison, three short hairs per tail scale helped distinguish it from P. platyops.
It is primarily recorded in hill and lower montane forest.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
