This thrush occurs in mountains of Sumatra, Java, and northern Borneo. Its island subspecies vary in plumage; Clements separated the broad Island Thrush complex into multiple species.
Plumage varies among island subspecies: the nominate form on Java is dark gray-brown above, loeseri in northern Sumatra is blackish, and many other forms have brown or gray upperparts with rufous underparts.
A 2010 Macaulay Library record places the Bornean subspecies seebohmi in stunted montane forest near the treeline at Laban Rata, Kinabalu Park, Sabah.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
