The Crimson-crowned Fruit Dove has a gray-green head and breast set against a violet crown patch.
Adults have dark green upperparts and a gray-green head, neck, and breast. A violet patch edged in yellow marks the forehead and crown; belly color ranges from yellow through orange to deep violet. The sexes are alike.
The Samoan form is usually seen feeding alone or in pairs, perched within the middle foliage of fruiting trees. In Samoa it has been recorded feeding on figs.
