This population was studied at Kalamaili Nature Reserve in the eastern Junggar Basin of Xinjiang. Surveys in 2005–2010 found the sexes in separate groups for much of the year, with a tendency toward association at the peak of the rut.
In the subspecies studied, adult males have long horns measuring 20–30 cm, while females are hornless. Fawns were distinguished by their much smaller bodies.
The 2005–2010 Kalamaili surveys found sex differences in grouping and habitat use during much of the year. Behavioral observations in April, July, October and December of 2007–2009 also showed seasonal differences in how much male and female activity overlapped.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
