A pika whose coat is reddish in summer and grayer in winter. It lives among rocky talus in moist conifer forests and stores plants as hay.
In summer, the fur is light reddish brown, becoming redder along the sides, with a reddish-white belly. Winter fur is grayer with a brown tint.
From summer into autumn it gathers grasses, sedges, and other plants, drying them into hay piles for winter. It does not hibernate and is most active in the morning and evening.
