This finch occurs in humid montane forest in the eastern Peruvian Andes. The Peru account places its local subspecies in the understory at 1,300–2,200 m.
The head is black with a broad chestnut band across the crown. The back is olive-gray, the underparts gray, and the throat and center of the belly white; a black band crosses the breast.
In eastern Peru it occupies the understory of humid montane forest. Peru Aves gives 1,300–2,200 m for that regional account and describes it as uncommon there.
