This sunbird lives in Tanzania’s Usambara Mountains. A study around Mazumbai Forest Reserve found it mainly in areas with limited crown cover; most recorded food came from non-native plants.
Adult males described in 2004 under the former name Nectarinia mediocris usambarica had a narrower red breast band than the other subspecies and violet upper tail-coverts.
In a 2018 study, birds were found mainly where crown cover was limited, and most recorded food came from non-native plants.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
