The stripe-necked mongoose is a large Asian mongoose. Cameras have also recorded it in forests in Odisha, eastern India.
The paper describes it as the largest mongoose in Asia.
Stripe-necked mongooses can be seen alone or with others. In Parambikulam, southern India, three were observed on a road towards hills and two on another road on a different day.
The survey ran from June 2011 to May 2012. Three animals were seen towards Vengoli hills on 15 August 2011 and two towards Poopara on 24 January 2012. Four further sightings were solitary animals in moist deciduous forest. Two camera-trap images came from evergreen and moist deciduous forest, adding photographic evidence to direct observations.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
In Parambikulam, a confirmed locality for this species, work has been undertaken to prepare for forest fires. The conservation foundation’s 2022–23 report records a fire-awareness campaign at Anappady in March 2023, involving about 56 forest officials, watchers, residents and other participants.
