The Red-billed Francolin is a ground-dwelling bird with yellow around the eyes and a red bill and legs. By day it uses dry savanna and thickets near water, eating plant and animal foods.
There is yellow around the eyes; the bill and legs are red, and the throat has no white or red. The male has long, sharp leg spurs.
In the arid Molopo Nature Reserve in South Africa’s North West Province, Red-billed Spurfowl gather near man-made waterholes. They drink there and use food found in and around antelope droppings.
Near a waterhole in Molopo, territorial males, pairs, and females with chicks were present. Females with chicks returned to nearby shrubland after visiting the waterhole.
