This tyrant flycatcher lives in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northeastern Colombia. Its original description recorded plumage from a single adult male.
The 1899 original description of the only specimen, an adult male, notes a white throat streaked with olive, a streaked olive breast, and ferruginous underparts and sides.
In the San Lorenzo Ridge study, many records from mature forest and secondary growth were at habitat edges. The paper also describes exposed perches along openings and edges as foraging microhabitat.
