The Mesic Four-striped Grass Rat ranges across southern and eastern Africa. In Mozambique's Chimanimani National Park, it was confirmed in montane grassland above about 1,600 m.
As a genus-level feature, Rhabdomys has four black longitudinal stripes on a tawny back and a dull-white underside.
A South African assessment says it favors mesic grassland and savanna with ground cover and mainly eats seeds and plant material. In Chimanimani National Park, Mozambique, it was captured in montane grassland above about 1,600 m.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
