This small flycatcher occurs in south-eastern Africa. It moves through the middle and upper canopy for insects, usually in pairs or small family groups.
It is about 10–12 cm long, with yellow-green upperparts, yellow to golden underparts and a rufous tail. The nominate race has a pale grey head; birds in southern Tanzania, Malawi and northern Mozambique are described as the greenish-yellow-headed race thomsoni.
It occurs in pairs or small family groups and may join mixed-species flocks outside the breeding season. It moves actively through the mid to upper canopy for insects, flicking its wings and spreading its tail. The atlas records foraging in riparian forest and dry thicket.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
