Preble's shrew is a tiny shrew weighing only a few grams. Records come from dry shrub-grass habitats and openings in montane conifer forests, among other sites.
Recorded weights range from 2.1 to 4.1 g. It has grayish fur on its back, silvery fur underneath, a long pointed snout, and a two-colored tail.
The authors inferred that soft-bodied prey may make up its diet from jaw and tooth form; this was not a direct feeding observation. Records include dry to semiarid shrub-grass areas, forest openings, and some marshes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
